25th EDITION

IL CINEMA RITROVATO 2011

25th EDITION

The editions of Il Cinema Ritrovato tend to return cyclically to one overwhelming theme: the 20th century — the first century witnessed by the cinema. The insight, knowledge and emotion that only cinema could give us. Themes and films that extend far beyond what they seem to be. Even if the theme might be too simple to mention, I’ll try to see our edition of 2011 through it, knowing of course that some other year quite innocently amounted to the same. We may also imagine one further step. If we wouldn’t have any other documentation, to how much would our selection amount? One example would be enough: our proudest development, now proposed for the ninth time – “One hundred years ago”. Reading Mariann Lewinsky’s summary, we would make this essential comment: the continuing series is not only about its time, representing a precious element missing from other passionate efforts to see our common past, it is just as much about the future, full of signs, sometimes almost as if the cinema could be a concrete predictor of things to come. The year 1911 also meant the beginning of the age of directors in the modern sense: being able to follow the growing achievement of Albert Capellani or Alice Guy casts a hypnotic spell over us 100 years later.
