I’ll start with a personal impression: our journey together, the eight cinephilic days of Bologna, becomes more poignant every year. Cinema, as we love it, is disappearing in front of our eyes. Even one projection of an early landmark of film history is nowadays a rare pleasure. Against this harsh reality, Il Cinema Ritrovato offers hundreds of cinematic pleasures of all varieties, presented in its three cinemas (one dedicated to silents, another to sound films, and the Arlecchino cinema for special visual treasures like, this year, the films of Josef von Sternberg or CinemaScope.) On top of all that, the festival offers the unique experience of outdoor evening screenings in the beautiful piazza, with thousands of local people sharing this love of cinema. And I will add something I know very well: our exceptional community – consisting of historians, scholars, archivists, restoration specialists, critics, cinephiles – cherishes the experiences of the week as an inspiration for the rest of the year.
