The Space Machine

Physics remind us that time and space are inseperable dimensions within every voyage. Cinema is also – and perhaps above all – a journey through places: dreams exposed onto film, parallel universes accessed through the big screen, far away lands brought within reach.

The section The Space Machine accompanies viewers to remote locations, and consciously plays on the polarity between the centre and the periphery: not to reaffirm it in a hierarchical or imperial terms, but to subvert the perspectives, bringing back into focus and cinematic horizon long-marginalised traditions and filmographies. From Asian cinema – travelling across India, Japan, and Russia – to Northern Europe and South American film cultures, and to the works of great masters that have portrayed the African continent, thanks to the now-historic section Cinemalibero. The Space Machine functions as a political instrument: cultural, in its pursuit of discovery and knowledge; human, in its pursuit to encounter, dialogue and respect.
