Film notes

In the early 1960s, a series of educational films was made to encourage safe driving by showing graphic footage of bodies being extracted from the wreckage of car accidents. These films have become legendary, not only for their shocking content, but also for the fact that they were shown primarily to children: highschool students ages 14-16. Made in Mansfield, Ohio (US), Wheels of Tragedy was the third film produced by the non-professional filmmakers known as the Highway Safety Foundation, and is perhaps their most accomplished work. Beyond showing the gruesome aftermath of several accidents (all filmed in vivid colour), Wheels of Tragedy attempts to dramatise the psychological toll inflicted upon the Ohio State Highway Patrolmen, whose job it is to clean up the injured and the dead from the crash sites.
