festival preview
First highlights of the festival presented by the Cineteca di Bologna, taking place from June 20 to 28. Nine days with masterpieces from film history, from morning to night in cinemas across the city, culminating each evening in the grand finale at Piazza Maggiore.
Presented, as always, by the Cineteca di Bologna, the 40th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato will pay tribute to Luchino Visconti, a filmmaker whose legacy the Cineteca di Bologna has helped preserve through the restoration of some of his greatest masterpieces, Senso, The Leopard (Il gattopardo), and Rocco and His Brothers, and whom we wish to celebrate in 2026, marking the 120th anniversary of his birth and the 50th anniversary of his death.
Another towering figure born in 1906, queen of a twentieth-century imaginary, is Joséphine Baker, whose complete filmography will be presented, alongside rare gems from the archives of Gaumont Pathé.
This year’s diva tribute will be dedicated to Barbara Stanwyck (ranked number 11 in the American Film Institute’s special list of Hollywood’s greatest stars). Following Katharine Hepburn in 2025, curator Molly Haskell will once again guide audiences in rediscovering one of the most formidable careers in cinema history.
These are just some of the first highlights announced today, alongside the opening of online accreditation sales, for a 40th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato that will once again take audiences on a journey across the breadth of film history: nine days of masterpieces, from morning to night in cinemas across the city, culminating each evening in the grand finale at Piazza Maggiore.
