Film Notes

Based on a story by Longanesi, adapted for the big screen by Ennio Flaiano together with the future director Steno and Orsola Nemi, the film was started in Rome in July of 1943. Interrupted after the 8 September, because of the precipitation of events in the war, it was then taken up again and finished in Turin – under the regime of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana- by Nico Giannini, with new actors and a partly re-written screenplay.

The only surviving materials of this singular example of surreal drama were two different copies of the time (both incomplete) conserved by the Cineteca Nazionale and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema. From the collation of these fragments it was possible to reconstruct the initial and final parts of the film, restoring an edition corresponding roughly to half of the original as attested by the censorship Visa.
