Film notes

Murnau, el lenguaje de las sombras [Murnau, the language of the shadows] is a series in four chapters of one hour each, made in Betacam video format, produced by Televisión Española S.A. in co-operation with Filmoteca Española, written and directed by Luciano Berriatúa. For the first time several many previously unknown documents on the life and work of the German director are presented. The natural landscapes where he filmed Nosferatu are shown, from Wismar to Lübeck, on the Baltic sea, to the Slovak castle on the Tatra Mountains, while the different stages of the film preparation are reconstructed again according to the texts published in the local press during the shooting. We discover the interest for the occult of Albin Grau, Nosferatu’s producer, through his publications and his esoteric drawings, together with unknown texts and drawings about the filming. But most of all we discover the existence of several versions of many of his films, as we analyse and compare the diverse editing for Der letze Mann, Tartüff, Faust and Sunrise.
