In the aftermath of World War II, Caen was almost entirely destroyed. Just a few buildings remained standing – the courthouse and the abbeys. After setting up prefabricated homes, the inhabitants of Caen spent eight months clearing the ruins. Then they built definitive homes, taking advantage of modern conveniences. But there still were many residents who had to be housed and reconstruction was to be completed.
