DIE KLEINE VERONIKA

Film notes

Veronika is a girl from a small mountain village in Tyrol. Since her parents are poor, her aunt pays for her Confirmation and invites her to the vibrant city of Vienna. What no one knows is that the aunt is working in a brothel. For the innocent young girl, the dodgy ambience and the customers turn out to be a great danger… Robert Land tells a simple, straightforward and heartfelt story. He creates a genre picture in which everything is ordered and has its place. But the outstanding quality of this last Austrian silent film is the great number of authentic pictures. Most of the film is shot on location. Therefore many of Vienna’s ‘disappeared places’ are captured on the reels of this film, long believed to be lost. It is absolutely breathtaking, probably the most beautiful Austrian silent film.
