Cardo, an unidentified English stage comedian, arrived in Portugal for a short tour in the late summer of 1916, and appeared in three short comedies; two of these have been found by the Cinemateca Portuguesa. In these comedies, half-fiction half-historical documents, Cardo imitates Chaplin’s make-up, gestures and gags. From an advertising of the time: “The famous artist, who is now considered the best comedian in the world, will have only three performances…”.
