“A hand-colored picture, full of dignity and great beauty. It was made in Florence and the backgrounds of palace gates, churches and gardens are perhaps the same that witnessed the tragic love of the Chevalier and the beautiful girl of his choice. The story is not dramatic, does not move us with emotion; but seems historic for the most part, and makes a desirable offering” (“Moving Picture World”, 17.8.1912). This copy is a new version subsequent to the one printed in 1996. That copy was in black and white, made from a negative from that period that came from the Cinémathèque Française. The negative contained information regarding both stencil coloring and tinting and toning, but it was marked in unknown codes. However, in 1996 the codes had not yet been deciphered. Several years later, the codes were deciphered and now the original tinting and toning have been restored with Desmetcolor.
