Film notes

Before he became President of the USA, Teddy Roosevelt wrote a history book called The Winning of the West. A friend of the painter Frederic Remington and the novelist Owen Wister (author of The Virginian), Roosevelt helped to create the myth of the West as a land built by rugged individualists. In 1898 he gathered together a troop of soldiers (some cowboys, some from the gentlemen’s clubs of New York) which he led to Cuba in the war against the Spanish. The fame of the ‘Rough Riders’ helped propel Roosevelt to the White House. Victor Fleming’s film gives an embroidered version of this episode. Two years later Fleming filmed The Virginian. The fragment shows substantial sections of the battle scenes.
