Here Rigadin, disguised as a cigar-smoking virago, dismisses his rival and wins the girl. In another 1910 comedy (Le Clown et le pasha nevrasthénique), he dresses up as a dancer and takes the place of Mistinguett, winning the heart of a pasha in the process. Cross-dressing was a big feature in the repertoire of Charles Prince (Charles Petidemange 1872-1933). From around 1910 until 1920 his Rigadin series was just as successful and prolific as Max Linder’s.
