Film notes

“With her mannered smiles, her eyes sometimes shaded by her slightly opened lids as if trying to escape the sun glare in an amateur film, Greta Garbo (still Gustaffson, and seventeen-years old) made her debut in 1922. Her first appearance on the screen was rather bizarre, according to the material available to us today: her back to the camera, she was the tallest of three bathing beauties in a row, gym shorts, black hat, large hips. The six minutes left of the comedy Luffar-Peter are nothing, just girls parading on the beach, chaperoned by a sulky matron, a tramp just barely seen as he comes near the group. But, as soon as the girl in shorts turns around and offers herself to the camera with an embarassed gaiety, something is already happening: she is not necessarily the prettiest, but she is somewhat different from the others, an inexorably neat face”.
