A deteriorated print from James Young’s The Bells (1926), starring Lola Todd and Edward Phillips, was optically printed and edited with music by Michael Gordon. The original scene from The Bells was elongated, and then double-exposed back onto itself, each frame seen with an adjacent one. This technique gives the film a quality of continual metamorphosis and impermanence. The scene was edited for Michael Gordon’s haunting score, as interpreted by violinist Todd Reynolds. A meditation on the nature of random collisions, the music and images together seem to conjure a sense of irrecoverable longing.
