“The script – we must admit it – is rather weak and the plot develops around a sentimental adventure lacking originality. All the interest resides in details and in the cinematic spirit that animates it, which is Mosjoukine’s cinematic spirit per se. And those details are just delicious. By any chance, has Mosjoukine been fascinated by Charlie Chaplin’s charm? We might end up believing it from the fact that the fantasy, imagined and lived by him in such intense manner, is deeply Charlie-like. And that happy and light vivaciousness, the sense of comic observation and mostly that burning flame. His leap towards the summit of inner drama shows him animated by true genius, the same genius he shares with Sofocles and Shakespeare […].
