“In the period ranging from the signing of the Matignon agreement and the closing of the Exhibition we see a flood of pseudo-Slav productions. Their intrigues are banale, as made in series. Officials with names ending in skoff or ski, jilted by aloof adventuresses, disappear in Siberia or maybe are forced by cruel whipping to drag boats ashore. Careful production features, nice to watch, but airy and emply as crinoline, light-footed as the dancers in the inevitable interval. Among the several titles, all interspersed with the words Tzar, Volga, troika or St. Petersburg, we like best La Citadelle du Silence (Marcel L’Herbier), brutal episode of a revolt set in Poland, and La dame de Pique (Fédor Ozep), who enriches the subject from Puškin with nice sets, a refined lighting and Marguerite Moréno’s acting
