The military farce was a popular genre in continental Europe, and with its boys-will-be-boys morality, this is a fairly typical example. The war is nowhere in evidence; the soldiers here are entirely devoted to skirt-chasing. Written by a German writer, this is a film intended to be widely exportable. It was directed by Lau Lauritzen the elder, who directed the great majority of Nordisk’s comedy shorts (37 in 1915 alone). He had a troupe of regular actors who would appear in film after film. Lauritz Olsen, who plays the brother officer, appeared in more than 200 films, making him the most prolific of all Danish film actors. Frederik Buch (the chubby orderly) appeared in almost as many films. He was extremely popular in Germany, where he was known as Knoppchen and where he pursued a fairly successful career after World War I.
