Film notes

Fox’s third for and with Lillian Harvey, this time with Jesse Lasky producing, and by far her best to date. Not a wow, but rates fairly well in that respect. What it does chiefly is to capture the right mood for the proper setting off of the Harvey personality. […] Story is perfect for the actress, a fantasy that treads as lightly as the girl herself, and gives her a crack at everything she does best.  […] Story’s effectiveness is largely due to the clever use of puppets, both in the script development and the action. The puppets are used both for production number purposes and the underlying theme of the story. They’re symbolical in their relation to the story, but it’s clearly drawn and easily understandable. Symbolism in films, when those who try it seek to go arty, usually is so complicated that Pinkerton and Scotland Yard combined can’t unravel it. This time, however, it’s done simply and effectively. […] Besides her singing and other dancing, Miss Harvey’s specialty work includes an adagio number in which she takes a tossing around that no other picture principal has thought of attempting.
