Gemma di Sant’Eremo was an ill fated film, massacred by censorship and crushed by the critics, who in Italy, could only see a mutilated and distorted version. Time has not been kind either, since this short fragment is all that remains of the nitrate base preserved by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema of Turin. The images salvaged from decay show a Menichelli who is first joyful and in love, then languid and decadent.
