Film notes

Recalling this work, Kuleshov warmly remembered the circus artists involved in the film. There is no doubt that circus aficionados will discover many spectacular moments here. There is more that the circus to it, however. Kuleshov took an engaging circus story set in the times of the Civil War and turned it into a tragedy of an artist forced into politics against his will. Kuleshov’s vision found a brilliant embodiment in the lead actor Sergej Komarov.
