An often cited major production (and a very good film, too) directest by Veit Harlan and centered on the character of Frederick the Great, Der Grosse König is of the greatest importance in nazi cinema, as an example of the self representation of Hitler. Here, the great leader, the King, is a lonely, isolated, victim of conspirancy, devoted to saving his country from disaster. The film is a self-explanatory example of that obsession of re-writing and correcting History that all dictators shared-Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin avid of the ability of those directors who helped them in this.
