Carl Froelich saw the birth of the German cinema when he was working with Oskar Messter, then – 30 years later – turned to face another birth: sound. Brand in der Oper is a good example of how he faced the problem, by attempting new solutions, experimenting and playing with sound and, also, witnesses of the very high average quality achieved by German sound films in 1930.
