Film notes

The documentary retraces the life, work and legacy of one of the greatest masters of world cinema, Vittorio De Sica, leading us to the heart of his vision: his extraordinary ability to transform life into narrative and human experience into images. Drawing on exclusive access to the De Sica family, previously unseen archival materials and the testimony of contemporary artists and filmmakers from around the world, the film paints an intimate and many-sided portrait of a director capable of transforming the observation of reality into universal emotion. More than a celebration, the film is a journey of discovery into the man, the artist and the surprising modernity of a vision whose vitality continues to illuminate cinema and our way of looking at the world. Wes Anderson, who is also an executive producer of the film, is among the many distinguished artists who pay tribute to De Sica’s work. The roster of celebrated names who have joined the project includes Isabella Rossellini, Ruben Östlund, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Francis Ford Coppola, Carlo Verdone, Nicola Piovani, Dominique Sanda, Asghar Farhadi and Andrei Zvyagintsev. Their readings of De Sica’s work are enriched by the affectionate recollections of family members and friends, from his son Christian to his grandchildren Andrea, Brando, Maria Teresa and Eleonora. Further depth is added by the French historian and De Sica biographer Jean A. Gili, Gian Luca Farinelli, director of the Cineteca di Bologna. Luciano De Ambrosis, who played the lead in The Children Are Watching Us, and Eleonora Brown, who starred alongside Sophia Loren in Two Women, also share their tender memories of working as child actors with De Sica.
