Navigating Film Copyright: Preservation, Access and the Future of Film Heritage in the Digital Age

Friday 26 June 10am-1pm
MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, via Don Minzoni 14

Preserving material and providing access to collections are key pillars of the mission of cultural heritage institutions, including film archives. Some preservation activities and access solutions may intersect with the copyright system, even more so in light of the new technological means available in the digital age. The workshop will explore how preservation and access are interlinked with copyright and will discuss practical solutions available to cultural heritage professionals to navigate the copyright realm. The starting point of the discussions will be two recent publications commissioned by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which aim at fostering the creation of a safe environment for professionals in cultural heritage institutions to carry out their important mission. The workshop will be divided into two parts – one on preservation and one on access – and will feature presentations of the toolkits, each followed by an interactive exchange among copyright experts, film archivists, and other professionals in the field to discuss key aspects and practical case studies related to preservation and access in the context of copyright. The aim is for copyright to act as an enabler to crack ajar the windows to cultural heritage institutions in order to enable discovering and revisiting the cinematographic treasures of the world in the most conducive legal conditions.
