Film Notes

Long considered lost, Le vertige was perhaps the greatest loss from the work of Marcel L’Herbier – an author particularly dear to the Mostra del Cinema Libero which dedicated a retrospective to him in 1985.

“When I saw that Cinégraphic risked bankruptcy, I proposed making a film with Pathé, to get back on my feet. They gave me more or less the same response as Gaumont when I was starting out. They said: ‘OK, here’s one of our screenplays, it’s called Le Vertige, go right ahead!’. Le Vertige was a melodrama, not very famous but it had some interesting elements… A lookalike story. A man, killed in Russia, has a double in Paris, and the woman who loves him thinks she has found him again… It was an overwhelming success which allowed me to carry on… And it was thanks to it that I was able to take on Le Diable au coeur and L’Argent”.
