He later served as its director for thirty-four years, from 1978 until 2003. He transformed the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>cinematheque into a reference point not only for Algerian directors, producers and journalists \u2013<\/em><br \/>\n<em>whom it also supported in every way possible \u2013 but also for Arab cinema, African cinema and,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>more generally, independent cinema, which was searching for new languages with which to recount<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the changes taking place in societies across the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que Algerienne became a meeting point for an Algerian civil society that was<\/em><br \/>\n<em>experiencing the development of the feminist movement and grew around the programming curated<\/em><br \/>\n<em>by Boudjema\u00e2. The late 1980s in particular constituted a golden age for the cinematheque and every<\/em><br \/>\n<em>screening, every meeting was attended by a large animated public that participated in impassioned<\/em><br \/>\n<em>debates on cinema and civil values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Kar\u00e8che\u2019s prestige turned the cinematheque into the leading authority for cinema in his country and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>a space that was known and appreciated in the world of international cinema.
