The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia<\/a> (NFSA) is privileged to have in its collection the early works of acclaimed director Philip Noyce. Our mission is to collect, preserve and share our collection, and our DVD releases are an important part of our \u2018sharing\u2019 strategy. The Il Cinema Ritrovato DVD Awards<\/a> are an excellent opportunity to showcase these films to an international audience.<\/p>\n

In the case of Good Afternoon \u2013 Phillip Noyce Early Works 1970-1974<\/i><\/a>, we chose to submit this title because in includes seven of the earliest films by one of Australia\u2019s greatest directors. It is the first time that the documentary Good Afternoon<\/i> and six of Noyce’s early short films (Home<\/i>, Sun<\/i>, Memories<\/i>, Intersection<\/i>, Finks Make Movies<\/i>, and Renegades<\/i>) are available on DVD. Philip Noyce was very supportive of this DVD project, which was created from original master materials. The artwork was designed by the NFSA’s in-house sales and distribution team.<\/p>\n

The NFSA is the custodian of 2.4 million collection items, documenting the history of Australia’s audiovisual production from 1896 through to today. DVD remains a popular platform to reach film lovers. DVD, as well as VOD platforms, allows the NFSA to reach its audience in formats that are in still in demand from its clients. The NFSA’s sales and distribution team will continue to create DVD products from the NFSA collection and distribute via the NFSA Online Shop.<\/p>\n

Our product is a longstanding ambition and long overdue. With the 2015 redevelopment of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery<\/a> to include the new Len Lye Centre<\/a> we intended to put Len Lye\u2019s work as a filmmaker centre stage. With a dedicated cinema along with other exhibition spaces, our visitors can experience Lye\u2019s experimental films, however, we recognise the need to expand our publishing in order to reach international audiences, particularly with regards to scholarship and in this case, a definitive collection of Lye\u2019s films on DVD. A number of our exhibitions and publications have been finalists in international awards and we are pleased with the worldwide interest in Colour Box: 19 Films by Len Lye<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

While this project is particular to our work with the artist Len Lye, and part of our role in fully exploring his practice, the process of producing Colour Box: 19 Films by Len Lye<\/em> leads us to further ambitions in publishing moving image materials, particularly in collaboration with international partners.<\/p>\n
