Film Notes

“It is, this Principessa […], a brillant remake – thanks to Camillo De Riso – of a gracious and racy short story by Roberto Bracco. The short story – and now we can say comic film – is skilfully interwoven onto a canvas of extraordinary (a little too extraordinary) case of resemblance between two women: a princess and a dancer, each of their identical physical beauty is then taken into very different and even opposite worlds. From the contrast of the austere costumes of the one and the confident ease of the other, flavorful episodes and exuberant situations are born of keen humor. Moralists, don’t be alarmed: we aren’t dealing with a scandalous princess. The good Camillo De Riso, with pure hands, has concealed with fig leaves the elegant licentiousness of Bracco’s novella. It is useless to say that on the screen, or better yet, that in written narrative the resemblance between the two women is prodigious, given that Leda Gys resembles perfectly… Leda Gys. She sustains the role of the noblewoman with self-possessed sobriety and that of the dancer with delightful mischievousness. In either of the roles she reveals a precious temperament that is worthy of good modern comedy. Of such a temperament, today, there is not an abundance. Incredibly pleasant, as always, in the part of the prince, Camillo De Riso, proves that he could in fact be the prince… of comic actors. A mise-en-scène well executed and extremely well photographed, I am completely satified with the production-house Caesar.
