Film Notes

Reconstruction project carried out in 2006 by Nikolaj Izvolov from materials held by Ekaterina Hohlova’s private archive and from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI). Sound edition by Arsenij Troickij with folk melodies of Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Produced by Arnol’d Giskin for Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography and Netski Film Studio. An adaptation of a novel by the Tajik writer Sadriddin Aini, Kuleshov’s Dohunda was meant to be released in 1936 and become the first feature-length sound film made in Central Asia. However, the film was never finished. The reconstructed version is based on the continuity script by Lev Kuleshov – an elaborate draft for the film he envisaged. His drawings made after photographs are original and unique.
