Film Notes

“Gys played in no less than 25 films for Cines and Celio in the years 1913/14. They were generally short or medium length (one or two-reelers), in which she had the opportunity of testing her abilities, interpreting various star roles. Her film personality began to grow, though it took several years and different film roles to fully develop. In the first films, made in 1913, Gys, helped by directors such as Negroni, Guazzoni and Antamoro, played roles which were almost always pathetic, in a series of stories in which, for the most part, she played the innocent romantic girl of noble birth or peasant extraction who is the unfortunate and innocent victim of disreputable mothers, dishonest husbands and step-fathers, of jealous duchesses or sinister adventurers. They were characters who were fundamentally positive, which the events of life had brought into tragic situations. This gave them strong appeal to public sympathy and support. A representative example of this type was her first full-length three-reeler film in which the actress played the main role. It was Celio’s Amore bendato (lit. Blind Love) in which she plays a kind-hearted gypsy girl who becomes a lady and finally remains the sole source of comfort to a poor blind man”.
