Film Notes

This nearly complete comedy directed by Dr. R. Portegg and with Rosa Porten as the protagonist is a most recent discovery and a rare item among the surviving Rosa Porten-films. Rosa Porten wrote, codirected and played the role of the variety artiste Stella Orlanda, a intrepid young woman manoeuvring between bourgeois mentality and the free spirit attributed to popular stage people. According to “Der Film” (19 May 1917) this comedy satirizes both attitudes in a great number of serious-comical situations. “Der Kinematograph” (9 May 1917) characterized Porten’s Stella as full of temperament, witty and impish. In addition to the acting, the papers praised the composition of the film, in which the comic calibre increases with every scene and culminates a highly amusing climax.
