Film Notes

A mixture of agit-propaganda, fiction, and documentary, this film was shot in the real conditions of the Civil War, during the Polish campaign in the summer of 1920. It was the first project of the future “Kuleshov team,” with Leonid Obolenskij and Aleksandra Hohlova playing the lead roles. As usual, Kuleshov was experimenting with montage – the film consisting of two reels with the total length of 700 m had 331 shots in it. Unfortunately the work no longer exists. The reconstruction was accomplished on the basis of surviving frame enlargements.
