Film Notes
Naum Kleiman: This material was kept by Eisenstein’s assistant editor Esther Tobak and then passed to the Gosfilmofond in the late sixties. The introduction was censored by Minister of Cinema Ivan Bolchakov, who said that a film could not begin in such a dismal manner. In regard to the scene with Staden, Eisenstein had initially planned it for the second part of the film, but then decided to keep it for the third part which he never filmed.
