Film Notes
This film was the first one made after a five year period, during which Kuleshov was not allowed to make films. He accepted to work on this project under pressure, and – as Kuleshov usually did in such cases – concentrated on solving formal, professional tasks rather than getting involved with the film’s ideological message. Because of this emphasis, the most interesting and memorable images are those of nature, not of Stalin. The film did not bring glory to Kuleshov, but it once again proved that this artist always lived in accordance with his own system of coordinates, and not the one regulated by the dominant tastes.
